WHAT IS BLUES DANCING?
Blues is a family of dances focused on connection, musicality and partnership. If that sounds scary, don't worry, the most important thing is to have fun! You absolutely do not need to bring a partner with you! People come to dance with everybody.
It looks something like this:
We hold regular classes for a variety of levels. You don't need to worry about bringing a partner—we rotate partners during lessons so you'll have a chance to dance with just about every lead or follow in the room!
You'll learn the most by regularly attending classes and then sticking around for the social dances to try out your new moves. If you see a dancer who's better than you, ask them to dance! Everyone started out as a beginner, and you can learn a lot from dancing with people at all levels.
See our Classes page for more information.
The best way to improve quickly is by taking private lessons. Most of our teachers offer private lessons and we encourage you to take as many as you can afford! Ask your favorite instructor about lessons.
What to wear
Dress casually and comfortably. Some people gussy up a bit and we always appreciate their style. We suggest either smooth sneakers or dress shoes. We discourage high-heel or open-toes shoes—we don't want you to hurt yourself!
We have a strong focus on making our partners happy and comfortable. Dancing can be a pretty physically demanding activity, so it's a good idea to use plenty of deodorant before you come. Some dancers even bring changes of shirt in case they get too sweaty throughout the night. And, of course, breath mints are never a bad idea!
See our Code of Conduct for more information.
It takes a lot of work to run a good dance, so the more help we have, the better! We're always looking for people to help out. Please contact us if you're interested in joining our team.
CODE OF CONDUCT
If you're asked to dance, we encourage you to say "yes!" There is absolutely no commitment past the 3 minute dance, but if you want to, occasionally people dance two or even three songs in a row. Of course, if you are uncomfortable for any reason, come find one of the organizers and we will address the situation immediately.
The Sundown Blues Dance Society is dedicated to a harassment-free and safe social dance experience for everyone. Our full anti-harassment policy can be found here.
What is Sundown blues?
The Sundown Blues Society is a non-profit volunteer run organization to created to promote blues dancing in the San Francisco Bay Area. Our team works to organize and run two weekly blues dance venues, Friday Night Blues in San Francisco and Beat the Blues in Berkeley. As an organization we strive to promote fun and welcoming environments where anyone can come and learn to dance their blues away.
